Hi from Glasgow (I think?). Yesterday, I went to Lake Windermere, which is the biggest lake in the Lake District. It was pretty and a little misty, but not too chilly at all. The sun even came out!
After a cruise on the lake, it was on to Grasmere, where apparently William Wordsworth is buried. There was a cute little old church there, too, and a a teeny tiny two-room bridge house. Also, the best gingerbread ever. EVER. It was like thick, soft, gingery graham crackers. Make sense? I know. Also, mint cakes. The dark chocolate version was like a better York Peppermint Patty, but the non-chocolate version was like a block of the sugariest mint ever. Fine, but not amazing.
Then, it was off to Scotland, where we stopped at Gretna Green. Young couples used to get married there because they could get married at 16 instead of the 21 required in England.
We ended the night in Glasgow and at Stirling Castle. The castle was a tad less impressive than it was made out to be, and so was the whole evening (for me). A (really good) bagpiper piped for us and walked us to dinner nearby, and he made a big production of cutting into haggis and telling us stories. I had a taste of the haggis and it was fine, but I can’t imagine eating a lot of it. (Edited to add: haggis is minced sheep/lamb meat and the heart, lungs, and liver all wrapped up in the stomach). All in all, it was a big group of us in a tiny room that was too loud and too hot and the event was too long. Then, it ended with a long, late bus ride with people three times my age conducting singalongs to everything from ABBA to traditional Scottish tunes to the YMCA song. Just not my scene.
It was made out to be a fun and authentic Scottish experience, when it was really a giant production. The bagpiper was authentic, but the experience overall felt cheesy. My intention is to go find the real authentic stuff in the evenings from this point on. Except I might get a massage tonight.

I don’t think I would’ve tried the haggis after reading your description haha. The strangest food I’ve ever had was octopus while traveling but I couldn’t get myself to take more than one bite haha. Hope you’re having the best time!
I’ve tried a number of odd things so far… not with much success. I’m not a huge fan of octopus, either!

I loveeee gingerbread and I’m so excited that Christmas is on it’s way so I have an excuse to make ALL the gingerbread-y things 😛
I didn’t grow up on gingerbread, but it was so good that I’ll be making all the gingerbread recipes you throw at me 😉
