Going into this weekend, I was feeling tired and irritable and also like I might be getting sick. Sure, I was excited to spend time with my family, but I didn’t really show it as I helped them unload the car with so much stuff and we headed to my dorm room. After that, I think it took approximately 5 minutes for me to calm down and just be happy they were here, and the weekend turned into just what the doctor ordered.
In fact, I think this was the prescription:
- Chipotle… for the first time in 4 weeks
Self-explanatory, right? Soul food, right there.
- A lot of massages… for the first time in four weeks
My shoulders (and neck and back and whole body) are still crazy-tight. However, having my dad around to rub my neck while I did some of my reading helped make it a little comfier.
- A Target shopping trip with my mom
My pantry, fridge, and freezer are well stocked with delicious food now. And, of course, I always enjoy wandering around Target and catching up with my mom.
- An incredibly delicious dinner
{Chilean sea bass with mushroom-soy broth}
{Brûlée-style cheesecake with berries}
I don’t even know what to say. Everything about this meal was amazing. The bread was sweeter and more interesting than I expected. The lobster mac & cheese was rich and cheesy with a perfectly buttery breadcrumb topping. There was tart lemon asparagus that wasn’t all that photogenic, but was fresh and wonderful. My fish was super flaky and had a lot of intense umami flavor. And the cheesecake was so creamy!
- A live hockey game
The Blue Jackets lost (badly), but the United Center is a very nice arena, the Blackhawks’ anthem singer is ridiculously talented, and it was a generally cool experience. Also, I love having all the extra time with my dad.
- A football win
The Buckeyes won. That is all.
- A morning walk around campus with my mom
It was a little chilly this weekend, but not cold. Basically, it was beautiful, so we walked and talked and she took 25982 pictures.
- Lots of productivity, lots of time to relax
I (obviously?) spent most of Saturday doing nothing school-related and enjoying my family’s company, but I did manage to get a lot done early Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Everything important was done by 4 pm yesterday, so I spent most of the evening relaxing… and eating.
{“Baked” sweet potato with sausage + peppers + onions}
Also, ice cream and many snacks. All the rest was much-needed.
So, it was kind of a wonderful weekend, and it went by too quickly (as all wonderful weekends do). But it was exactly what I needed.
Have a great Monday! Talk to you tomorrow with a day-in-the-life post!
How was your weekend?
What are you needing right now? Take care of yourself!

Yum! Your food photos always look so amazing! And I hope you had a good time at the hockey game (and I’m happy my Blackhawks won 😉 ) I hope to go to a game this year as well!

I hope you get to go! Hockey is such a fun sport to watch 🙂
Hooray for spending the weekend with your family. That’s what I did this past weekend and it was so great. They can usually help me slow down and take care of myself more 🙂
And your family seems to pick the BEST restaurants. That bread and that mac and cheese looks incredible!
Family time is so restorative! Haha yesss we make food a priority 😉
I’m sorry you were feeling lackluster this weekend! I’m so glad you took the initiative to take care of yourself though. I have a hard time giving myself a break, so it’s always nice to hear of others doing what is right.
Right now, I am needing the exact same thing. Rest. I foresee a nap in the near future.
Feel better, Ellen!! <3
I struggle with giving myself a break, too. It’s good to remember that I need to prioritize that.
Get some rest! I hope you get to feeling better soon!
Yes, a great weekend. We went to Polaris to see Tom Hanks in “Bridge of Spies”. With Tom Hanks, it’s gotta be good. Birthday dinner at Mitchell’s Steak House. Great!
We even had leftover steak and wine for dinner Sunday evening. (and a salad and a potato)
Go Bucks! That was also a nice birthday event. Glad to be watching in a warm house. Of course, Dale, Carol and Cliff( and I don’t know who else) were there.
Hard to go wrong with a Cameron Mitchell restaurant! Glad you had a nice birthday!
I’d think Chipotle + massages would cover over a world of hurt. ? Especially if family was involved.
Hard weekend for me, as a good majority of it was spent either in the process of saying goodbye, or feeling sick as a dog. Ugh. I haven’t been this sick in forever. I’m trying to do everything I can to speed my recovery (if that’s possible… ?), because I leave Sunday to fly to California to help my grandparents. But it’s been a pretty awesome Monday, all things considered…I’m feeling improved and my aunt is visiting us from North Carolina. ?
