Well, hello there. It’s been a while. Happy Thinking Out Loud Thursday!
The number of times over the past week I wanted to sit down and write/finish a blog post is crazy. So many times. I have a bunch of drafts going and recipes that are ready to be shared, but much like I couldn’t squeeze yoga teacher training into my schedule this quarter, I also can’t always find a few hours to pour into the blog. So, know that if I’m here, I’m so happy to be, and if I’m not, I wish I was. In the meantime, thanks for sticking around. And you can always find a little more of me on Instagram. 🙂
Now, let’s link up with Amanda and catch up on what’s happening in my life and mind this week.
1.) Let’s start with the best stuff.
On Saturday morning, it was nearly 50°F and sunny. I ran 8 miles in shorts. In Chicago! In January! I was going to do 4 miles out and 4 back, but then decided that I’d keep going and Uber back… because I had a really good feeling about that. I’m super glad I did because I guesstimated correctly and 8 miles out on the lakefront was gorgeous and it brought me pretty freaking close to Trader Joe’s. So, naturally, I walked on over to Trader Joe’s, bought 7 pounds of sweet potatoes (and plenty of other groceries), and took an Uber back to campus. Best morning.
2.) How I spent the rest of Saturday is kinda fuzzy. I know it was schoolwork. I imagine it was a lot of reading. I do a lot of reading these days. And then I headed back downtown to the Apple store, where I learned my computer battery is “bad”. However, it’ll last me through the rest of the quarter, so I’ll keep using it until spring break and then get a new battery.
3.) Sunday, oh, Sunday. What a day. I went to the library at noon to meet someone to work on our International Econ problem set. Since I’m making an effort to go to all the yoga classes taught by the ladies who I trained with that are currently taking the second portion of teacher training, I took a break for that mid-afternoon. I came back to meet more people to work on econ at 4:30. With four of us and all our contacts in the class, I expected the one problem to take maybe 3 or 4 hours. With about an hour break for dinner, we were working until 12:30am. And this is why I don’t have time to blog.
All that said, I’m endlessly glad that my major is collaborative rather than competitive. I really can’t overstate the value having people to commiserate with.
4.) I don’t know about you, but I need time to wind down before bed. If I go straight from doing something to trying to sleep, no matter how late it is, I can’t. I stupidly attempted this on Sunday night after we finished econ. I then laid in bed for about 3 hours, had a mild anxiety attack, and couldn’t sleep.
5.) A deal I have with my mom is that I can text her any time, no matter what. I don’t expect a response at weird times or if she’s busy, but it helps to get my thoughts out into the world when there is too much on my mind. I started texting her in the middle of the night on Sunday when I couldn’t sleep, she happened to be awake, and started sending me puppy GIFs to chill me out. That made it all better.
6.) Actually, both my parents are total lifesavers this week (and, really, every week). My dad has been letting me brainstorm with him for my creative writing class and kindly pointing out the logic flaws in my story.
7.) Unfortunately, Sunday was not my only sleepless night. I woke up at midnight after sleeping for about an hour and a half Monday night and was awake until 4:30. I ended up getting an assignment done at 3:00 because I couldn’t bear to lie in bed any longer. I’d love it if this insomnia could stop soon, though. Part of me wondered if it’s a super bizarre adverse reaction to Whole30. That’s probably just the part of me that wants chocolate, ice cream, and Diet Coke…?
8.) I went out to dinner with Susie on Tuesday night. We went to Nando’s Peri-Peri, which opened very recently in Hyde Park. I got the quarter chicken and a side salad. It was super tasty and I’ll definitely go back to Nando’s. I love chicken.
{We decided Nando’s has the worst possible lighting.}
As always, the company was the best part. Love her tons and tons and tons. And I also love the fact that I slept for over 9 hours afterward. (Thank you, Zzzquil.)
9.) I think I said this last week and it was obviously a lie (see point 3), but the International Econ problem set actually seems manageable this week. I want to talk it over with some friends, but I do think I know the answers this time. Let’s hope I’m right.
10.) And now I want to leave you with some of my favorite recipes + reads from the week.
- Like way-better homemade Chocolate Fudge Pop Tarts. –> Chocolate Hand Pies
- So freaking creative. –> Curried Turkey Sloppy Joes
- So much color and flavor. –> Thai Beef Bowls
- Running is analogous to life. –> Life Lessons Running Has Taught Me
- Maybe stop doing sh*t you hate. –> Want to or Should Do?
Your turn:
Can you fall asleep quickly or do you need to wind down?
Do you like Pop Tarts? Favorite flavor? I used to love Brown Sugar Cinnamon and Strawberry. Oh, and the new peanut butter ones are great.
Anything else I should know?

Sleep is magic. Convinced.
puppy gifs do make everything better!!! hope your sleeping patterns go back to normal!
You and me both 🙂
I totally need to wind down before sleeping. If i’m on my computer or anything before sleeping (not reading a book or just thinking and praying or journaling) I stay awake for at least half an hour before going to sleep.
I was SO excited about seeing how far you ran; what a miracle! 🙂
I hope you give yourself all the time to wind down you need ❤️
Puppies are the best. And Pop Tarts?! I haven’t eaten a Pop Tart in at least a decade, if not longer!! I used to love those Brown Sugar and Cinnamon ones, too. Man, maybe….. nope, not gonna do it. haha
LOL I was considering getting some myself. Probably not. But who knows…
Runs that end with food are the best runs haha. And I love my sleep for sure!!
All runs should end with a refuel for sure!
Yay for combining a run AND trader joes! It’s a good thing I don’t live in the US or I’d move strategically close to a Trader Joes so I could go there every day haha.
I definitely need time to wind down for bed. Though I’m fine if I’ve just been watching TV. We used to go to a bible study at night and because I’d been talking with my friends and having fun it would take me FOREVER to fall asleep – even though it was like 11pm!
I’m the same way. It’s why I hate being out late – because I know I’m going to be awake even later. 😛
