Hey there! Happy Thinking Out Loud Thursday! My first week of classes has been a good one – not too busy and not too boring. But as the week ends, everything gets a little bit busier, so I’m going to dive right in to some random first-week-of-school thoughts. Thanks for the link-up, Amanda!
1.) I spent 45 unnecessary minutes on Monday night totally rethinking my major because my econ discussion included scary matrices that I didn’t want to do then or ever. I like math enough to be an econ major. I don’t like math enough to spend 8 hours solving one part of one problem. It all turned out okay, though, because it turns out a single sentence can replace all the legwork for the purposes of the problems.

Yay for simple solutions! Oh, wait. I just looked at my first problem set. Let’s see how that goes before we decide that this issue has been resolved.
2.) So while I’m still pretty okay with my planned major, I’ll be done with it early enough that I’ve been spending more time than is healthy considering second majors and minors. I think I’m pretty set on a minor in statistics… but I’m also vaguely tempted to try to add a political science or public policy major. I should probably try to figure that out. Additionally, I spend too much time looking for internships and jobs and careers because I just want to know what to do with my life. (Look for more intelligible thoughts on this soon.)
3.) I think I really like the way my schedule worked out, but ask me again in a couple weeks. Aside from my econ major class, I’m taking a social sciences class called Self, Culture, and Society (Self), Intro to International Relations (IR), and my (probably last) quarter of Spanish.
4.) I haven’t done anything with Spanish in two years, so I was extremely grateful when I walked into class and understood the professor. That’s a good omen, right?
5.) Things I didn’t realize how much I missed from school:
- There are more than 5 people to talk to (in person) on a regular basis
I enjoy my alone time, but did you know the world is full of people to talk to? It can be fun!
- Having places I’m supposed to be
Classes! Clubs! Discussion sections! I have a purpose, guys!
- Learning things that interest me from teachers who are oddly engaging
My IR professor is a really good lecturer (even if his public speaking skills aren’t the best) and my econ professor is an extremely intimidating enigma.
6.) And now let’s very briefly transition from all talk of school to talk of fall, because it is definitely here. The days are getting shorter and chillier and the other day I even wore boots and jeans. Whoa.
7.) Fall means apple picking! That’s what I’ll be doing Saturday afternoon when I’m trying to forget about the work I probably should actually be doing. Also, it probably means delicious things like apple crisp. ?
8.) Care packages are fun. Really, I just forgot a few things (including my econ textbook) at home, so my mom shipped it with some other stuff. Pumpkin Spice Kettle Corn and Pumpkin Spice Oreos? Plus, trail mix and candy!
9.) Fun fact: I’m convinced that those snack-size Hershey’s they sell mostly around Halloween are somehow better than normal Hershey’s milk chocolate, which I’ll eat, but I’m not all that crazy about. I’m mildly addicted to these and have been since my junior year, when I needed them to get through long evenings working on producing the school newspaper.
And that’s all for me for today! I’ll talk to you tomorrow with some Friday favorites!
What is/was your college major?
Do you have any food shape preferences? I know a lot of people like shaped Kraft mac & cheese better than regular and shaped Reese’s better than regular…

Ooh I love jeans weather. I used to not like Jeans until I found ones that fit me just right! 🙂 And those pumpkin spice oreos look really good!

It’s sooo hard to find the right jeans, but I think they’re worth looking for! Perfect jeans are a wardrobe staple 🙂 Haha, I love them! I may or may not have eaten the vast majority of that pack last night. I tried to share, but I only had a few takers. 😉
Choosing college majors or changing them is always interesting Last year I was a Psych major and while I love me my brain and mental ideas it just wasn’t meant to be. I am now a proud English Major – who loves every single one of her classes (even though the constant papers gets tough).
Unfortunately I was wearing Jeans and Leggings 2 weeks ago, you gotta love the Minnesota weather!
As for food shapes…I don’t really have one. Well maybe during valentines and they have all the cute bear shaped and and heart shaped foods XD!
Constant papers is my nightmare I think. I love reading and writing both, but I still find paper-writing pretty draining.
Minnesota can definitely rival Chicago in icky winter weather!
I miss Spanish. I took 3 years of it in college attempting a minor. But my professor was actually the worse and told the class that any one who didn’t speak it natively or fluently wouldn’t pass the final class required. Awesome. It was my senior year and I needed the credit to pass so I wasn’t risking it, especially since I had a job lined up already. I’m dying to get Rosetta Stone! Even though I’m a SAHM so unless my toddler starts talking in Spanish I’ll never use it haha
I say give it a shot! Learning languages is fun! And, hey, you could always teach Ryan a little 😉
Your outfit is adorable in that picture! Yay for jeans weather 🙂
Thank you!
I majored in psych in college, but I seriously thought about switching to philosophy about halfway through because I fell in love with the subject. I had no idea what I’d do with a phil degree, though, so I stuck it out with psych. And it’s honestly felt like fall for over a month already. I’m afraid I’m going to blink and it’s going to be over since half of our trees are already naked!
We definitely still have leaves… for now! I hope fall stays around a while – it’s so pretty.
I love that your mom is already sending care packages! I went to school less than an hour away so I never had any mail. Though that did mean I popped home for food and laundry pretty often ha
Homemade food and non-communal laundry machines sound like a pretty compelling reason to run home 🙂
The only kind of pasta I really love is angel hair. Weird, huh? But I swear, it *tastes* different…maybe its just that it’s more fun to eat. 😉
Last year, it seemed like everyone around the internet went apple picking but me. So this year, I *really* want to go!! Problem is, I don’t know of any nearby apple orchards…better look into that…
And weird question, but where did you get that beautiful shirt?? I just love it!
Apple picking is fun! Highly recommend 🙂
Thank you! I actually got it on massive sale from Free People a couple years ago. I’m not one to go for $75 shirts, but I think it was like $15 after all the markdowns!
Math = death….just had my first test of the semester today :/ ….
And last year when I took micro econ….it was horrid!
Hahaha yeah, I’m quite glad to be done with just math. I generally like econ… but this class is a little rough – and it’s only week 1! I think I’ll try to stick it out, though.
Those classes sound so hard. I never liked college, so I went in the military. I only like spiral shaped mac n cheese. Hershey bars are proof there is a God. Thanks

It’s a challenge, but I do like it. 🙂
