On Thursday, I finally acquired some Pop-Tarts.
And they are just as lovely as I wanted them to be.
On Saturday, I was chatting with one of the cashiers at the convenience store downstairs in my dorm about things you ate as a kid that disgust you now. (Her mom put gummy bears in her oatmeal as a kid and now she can’t eat either.)
I’ve been saying for a while that we need to talk nostalgic snacks. Time for some snack chat.
Things I ate as a kid that disgust me now:
- Grapes with chip dip
My grandma makes amazing chip dip. Unfortunately, I loved it so much as a kid that I put it on everything, including grapes. She still makes it for every gathering, and I watch family members load up plates with cheese, veggies, chips, and dip… but I can’t bring myself to eat it anymore.
- Ketchup on bread
Um. I think there was sometimes meat on a sandwich (with ketchup) that I just didn’t appreciate, so I’d pick it off and just eat the ketchup and bread. This morphed into just eating ketchup and bread.
- Jelly and Ritz crackers
I used to claim I hated peanut butter, so my dad’s snacks of peanut butter and crackers wouldn’t do. Instead, I slathered jelly on crackers and ate that.
Snacks I ate as a kid that I haven’t had in way too long:
We always had about 157438 boxes of cereal in my house, and this was usually one of them. It’s sweet and crunchy and delicious. But I know raisins are polarizing, so I guess not everyone would agree…
- Carrots and Ranch dressing
- Cinnamon-sugar toast
My grandma made this a lot. It’s just buttered toast that’s been sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, but it tastes like magic.
- Chocolate Fudge and Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts
- Colored Goldfish
They were better than the regular ones.
- Melted chocolate chips and pretzel sticks
Chocolate-covered pretzels (sort of)!
Snacks I ate as a kid that I still eat regularly:
You know this.
- Peanut butter and apples (also peanut butter on a spoon)
And this.
- Trail mix
My love for trail mix started at my grandparents’ house, where there was always a Tupperware container of the sweet & salty stuff ready for consumption
- Berries + bananas + Cool Whip
I’ve never really liked fresh whipped cream, but I really enjoy the processed magic of Cool Whip with fruit.
Your turn! What are some of your favorite (and least favorite) childhood snacks?

I used to dip Oreos in ketchup and put mustard on my french fries. I love mustard so much I could eat it by the spoon full! 😉 I enjoy Clif bars for snacks, as well as peanut butter and popcorn. Have a great day x

Hmm Oreos and ketchup, eh? That’s interesting 😉 I LOVE mustard, too. Sounds like you have some pretty tasty snacks these days, as well. Thanks! Have a lovely day, Edye 🙂
HAHA, grapes in dip cracks me up. I ate carrots dipped in ketchup, which actually isn’t too bad.
I mean, ketchup has tomatoes… Tomatoes are sort of like vegetables… it all works 😉
I have never heard that song until know! Wow is that crazy 😉 When I was a kid, I would dip potato chips in yogurt. Kids are so adventurous it is scary at times! Now I love having popcorn and apple with nut butter for snacks.
The song was designed/composed for one of my favorite podcasts (Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend). Haha potato chips and yogurt, that’s great 😀 Sounds like your current fave snacks are some of mine, too. Have a great day, Alison 🙂
Remember–a family with six kids. Most common snack was cereal. The Sunbeam bread man stopped at our house. Mother sometimes bought yummy cinnamon sweet rolls which she promptly hid. I could find them.. Sometimes they were forgotten and found weeks later- pretty hard. Hard to imagine with teenage boys, isn’t it? Pepsi was a treat, reserved for weekends with popcorn.
Cereal is a pretty good snack, if I do say so myself.
I have a ton of nostalgic snacks, but I can’t think of them all. I used to love Cheese-whiz (maybe because we usually only had it on the 4th of July), but I think if I tried it now, I’m pretty sure I’d think it was gross.
One would probably be Goldfish crackers (known in our house affectionately as “Shish”; I named them that before I had mastered my “F”s!), although I think I would still love them even if they weren’t nostalgic. Also cheddar cheese cubes – just cheese cut into kid-sized squares. Ritz crackers and cheese, Wheat-Thins, and gummy bears. Oh, and Roll-Ups! We would take a tortilla, and spread a sauce of choice (my favorites were cream cheese or pesto) and then usually lunchmeat, but sometimes something else. Then we’d roll them up, and cut them into little 1” or so rolls…SO good! It’s been too long! (Although, that was more of a New Years thing.) And then of course there is the Interstate Mix that Hannah mentioned in her comment on a different post. (I did think of it before I saw her comment! :P) I know there is more, but I can’t think of them all!
Oh, there is one more, and that is a new addition. Cola flavored Mentos from China. Kind of a long story, but we were part of a program that we decided to stop a couple years ago, which led to us having to say goodbye to some old friends (not as in age, but in time that we’ve known them). One of those was a family who had relatives in China, whom they would visit about once a year, and the family would bring back some Mentos to share with everyone. I still have a few left, and whenever I have one, it reminds me of those days! So kind of new nostalgic, but still…
Haha we have several things in my family that we refer to a little differently because of some childhood pronunciations, too. I’ve had those roll-up kind of things before! They’re so good. And, yeah, cheese and crackers is a total classic 🙂 I remember Mentos, but I definitely never had cola-flavored ones. That sounds super interesting.
Ew, gummy bears in oatmeal?! And haha jelly on ritz! I love bologna sandwiches with ketchup when I was little which I would never eat now
Right? I can’t imagine! Ohhhh goodness, I used to eat bologna sandwiches with ketchup, too. Hmm I can’t remember the last time I had bologna, but I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say I don’t miss it…
Haha wow! Some of those snacks sound very interesting. 🙂 I really can’t think of many snacks I had as a kid that I won’t have now. Totally with you on the cinnamon-sugar toast and Pop-tarts though!! Those are the best. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a Pop-Tart, I think I should revisit those soon… 😉
Have a Pop-Tart! Do it! They’re lovely 🙂
Food, and especially snacks, is serious stuff, so I had to devote several days to the contemplation of snack nostalgia. 😉
Snacks I ate as a kid that would disgust me now:
1) Fruit gummies. Ugh. We used to eat them when us kids played outside in our wilderness of a backyard. Now, I just cringe. They kind of horrify me.
2) Red Vines. I never truly loved them, but I used to think they were good and would eat them by the handful. Until some point, when I was like, “These just taste like sweet…and chemically…what flavor are they supposed to *be* anyway??”
3) Cheez Whiz. Just remembering how much my brothers and I used to love the stuff, piling our crackers high with the stuff and even squirting it straight into our mouths, gives me the willies. Real-deal sliced cheese on crackers for me now.
Snacks I ate as a kid that I haven’t had in *way* too long:
1) My mom’s Chex Mix. I think I already mentioned how I *need* some of her other snack mix, so that too. She makes awesome snack mixes! 🙂
2) Peanuts and candy corn! Does anyone else eat this addictive combo? It is SO good; we always would start making it around Thanksgiving and keep a bowl of it on the counter throughout the holiday season. I’m sure I ate WAY too much, but we haven’t made some in forever, and I am really craving it!
3) Graham crackers dipped in milk. For some reason, I associate this treat with my dad…maybe because he was almost as into it as us kids, maybe he gave it to us more often, I don’t know. 😉 But perfection was achieved when you could hold the graham cracker in your cup of milk until it was soggy straight through, but just firm enough to remain stable as you brought it to your mouth. 😛
Snacks I ate as a kid that I still eat (semi) regularly:
I don’t really eat the snacks I used to, so I couldn’t think of much in this category. With one notable exception… 🙂
1) Trail mix. Pretty much any kind. The best, and the only legit sort of trail mix IMO, has nuts, some kind of dried fruit and chocolate (the darker the better!). I don’t have trail mix as often as I would want to…especially any from Trader Joe’s! 🙂
This was fun…thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
I used to love gummies/fruit snacks, too. I feel like they’re a pretty necessary kid food 😉 I’ve never had Red Vines, but I did used to eat Twizzlers all the time. Hmm I wonder if I’d still like those now… I might have to test that out sometime. Never had Cheez Whiz. I might keep it that way 😀
Chex mix is the best. SO addictive. I’ve never specifically had peanuts and candy corn together, but the sweet-and-salty thing is always appealing! I’ve had candy corn with pretzels, and that’s pretty tasty. Hahaha I love the idea of graham crackers and milk. I get that “perfectly soggy” thing… I totally did that with Chips Ahoy cookies and Oreos. So satisfying 😀
And, duh, yes to trail mix. Always yes to trail mix.
Thanks for joining me 😀
