Whoa. That sounds like a serious title – but don’t worry! This is actually going to be fun. This post is inspired by (copied from?) this Buzzfeed poll, which I stumbled upon this weekend. I love talking foodie favorites, and sharing this seemed like the perfect way to do that. Basically, you have to choose to eliminate one food from each group of three. I’m going to share my picks, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
- Pancakes, waffles, or French toast?
The loser: French toast. To me, it’s basically soggy bread. I’m sure there are good French toasts, but the vast majority = soggy bread. Pass. Waffles are fluffy + crispy and great. Pancakes are probably my favorite – doughy and delicious.
- Pie, brownies, or cake?
The loser: Pie. I think. I don’t like pie crust, but I like pie filling. Brownies are chocolatey, fudgy deliciousness. Cake can be really good, as evidenced by my recent experience with Nothing Bundt Cakes
- Crinkle-cut, steak, or curly fries?
The loser: Curly fries. Honestly, I really like fried potatoes, so I don’t hate them. But they have a weirder texture. I like the perfectly crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside textures of the other two much better. Mmm. Been too long since I’ve had good fries.
- Pizza, pizza rolls, or bagel bites?
The loser: I don’t care, as long as pizza stays. I’ve had pizza rolls one time and I’ve never had bagel bites. Pizza is the best.
- Sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, or peanut butter cookies?
The loser: Sugar cookies. I love peanut butter, and chocolate chip is a classic. I’ve definitely had great sugar cookies, but the others totally win for me.
- Bacon, sausage, or ham?
The loser: Sausage. I really do sometimes like it, but the texture isn’t my favorite – and I really love bacon and ham.
- Onion rings, potato skins, or mozzarella sticks?
The loser: I think potato skins? I love the cheesiness of mozzarella sticks and the crunchy goodness of onion rings. And I’ve never had a potato skin, so I don’t know what I’m missing 😉
- Crab, lobster, or shrimp?
The loser: This. Is. Too. Difficult. I love them all! I might say lobster, though, just because it’s the most difficult one to actually eat. And I love crab cakes and shrimp just a little more.
- Mini burger sliders, ribs, or hot wings?
The loser: I’m actually indifferent. Hot wings and ribs are super messy and not worth it to me, and I’d rather have a normal-sized burger than sliders.
- Quesadillas, burritos, or tacos?
The loser: Burritos. Tacos are fabulous, and quesadillas are pure cheesy comfort food. And I can still have burrito bowls, right? Yes! And those are less messy and you can choose what you get in each bite so the balance is perfect.
- Bread rolls, cornbread, or buttermilk biscuits?
The loser: It totally depends. I feel like when done well, these are of equal carby goodness. But I can also think of circumstances when they’re really dry and unsatisfying.
- Beef, pork, or chicken?
The loser: Pork. No questions asked. Beef = burgers and steak. Chicken is just a delicious staple in my life. Pork is often overdone and just not that special to me.
- Energy drink, tea, or coffee?
The loser: I don’t care, as long as water and Diet Coke remain.
- M&Ms, Skittles, or Reese’s Pieces?
The loser: But I like them all! Ummm Skittles? But please don’t hold me to that.
- English muffins, bagels, or croissants?
The loser: Croissants. I’m one of apparently not very many people who love English muffins. And bagels are incredible. Croissants don’t do that much for me; they don’t feel substantial.
- Lasagna, spaghetti with meatballs, or mac & cheese?
The loser: Spaghetti with meatballs. I actually like all three of these, but I feel like I can get my tomato-based sauce fix elsewhere, and lasagna and mac & cheese are irreplaceable. Hard to explain, I guess.
- Ice cream, milkshakes, or frozen yogurt?
The loser: I guess… frozen yogurt? Milkshakes have grown on me in my time at UChicago, and ice cream is certainly going to be in my life forever. That said, I really do like froyo.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I hope it got you thinking about the important things in life 😉 Also, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on some of these! Are there any that are insanely obvious to you? Anything you don’t care at all about? Tell me!
Are you doing anything to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

As long as I have french toasts and pizza in my life, it’s perfect!!

Pizza is such a necessity <3
Me and my friend copied this we loved it!can you make another one please!!
I could probably do that sometime 😉
We are so different Ellen
🙂
I did this a couple of days ago! The hardest ones for me were the dessert/sweets because I have a MAJOR sweet tooth. I could not decide between ice cream, milk shakes, or frozen yogurt! The savory ones were more easy for me to choose between. 🙂
Fun poll!
I agree! That particular one was the hardest for me, too. I love sweet stuff 😀
Hi Ellen! I have heard so much about you from my sister, that I decided to start following you myself. =D Is it too weird to answer all your questions? I hope not…
Pancakes, waffles, or French toast? I’m not sure if I’ve ever had waffles, but if I have, it’s been a long time. So I’d probably say waffles? But I’d definitely keep pancakes!
Pies, brownies, or cake? If it was a fruit pie vs. a chocolate cake, the pie would certainly lose. But a fudgey chocolate pie with graham cracker crust…any cake loses! (I pretty much agree with you about pie crust. Exception: Costco’s pumpkin pie…every time I eat it, I promise myself I’m not going to eat the crust, but I end up eating it anyway. =P)
Crinkle-cut, steak, or curly fries? I’ve never had crinkle-cut, so maybe they would lose? I love curly fries, but In-N-Out Burger have unbeatable fries.
Pizza, pizza rolls, or bagel bites? I have never had pizza rolls, but bagel bites lose to good ol’ pizza!
Sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, or peanut butter cookies? I was going to say sugar cookies, but I’m not a big fan of pb cookies. They are probably equal.
Bacon, sausage, or ham? Ham, hands down. Too salty/chewy weirdness. I used to like it, but now it’s just ok. Give me bacon!
Onion rings, potato skins, or mozzarella sticks? Same as you…never had a potato skin, so they lose!
Crab, lobster, or shrimp? Um…I think I might have had crab or lobster before, but if so, it was on a tray of all kinds of seafood my dad ordered, and that was a long time ago. I love shrimp, though! So I can’t fairly answer that question.
Mini burger sliders, ribs, or hot wings? I don’t know. I’ll be honest, and admit that I’ve never had any of these that I can remember.
Quesadillas, burritos, or tacos? I agree with you; burritos lose.
Bread rolls, cornbread, or buttermilk biscuits? Again, I agree with what you said, but I’m just not a fan of even the good buttermilk biscuits.
Beef, pork, or chicken? Yup, pork.
Energy drink, tea, or coffee? Lol…I agee with your sentiment. I don’t drink any of the above.
M&Ms, Skittles, or Reese’s Pieces? Tough choice between Skittles and Reese’s Pieces. I’m a huge snob when it comes to peanut butter and chocolate. I only like natural pb with chocolate chips, and there is only one pb/chocolate cookie that I kind of like. But I don’t like the fake fruity of Skittles. I think Skittles would lose, though.
English muffins, bagels, or croissants? I like all three, it would depend on the mood I was in. Over all…maybe English Muffins? But there is nothing like a toasted English muffin with butter… (You sound like my sister about the croissants!)
Lasagna, spaghetti with meatballs, or mac & cheese? Spaghetti and meatballs. If I’m going to have pasta, I’d much rather have alfredo/parmesan and chicken than red sauce. That goes for most things, though. =P
Ice cream, milkshakes, or frozen yogurt? Yeah, I’d have to eliminate froyo…there is a time and place for it, but I’m not usually craving it.
Wow, that is VERY long! Sorry if this is weird! I’ve never done this before…thanks for the fun!
Nothing for St. Patrick’s Day, just regular grocery shopping!
Haha that’s okay; I love learning about other people (and their tastebuds, apparently 😉 ).
Enjoy grocery shopping! It’s my favorite 😀
I need to steal this survey 😉
Please do! I did 😉 And I’d love to see your answers!
Oh man I disagree on the burritos part! I love everything wrapped all up in a bread blanket. It’s the perfect thing for me (I eat some type of burrito or wrap everyday haha) I do agree about bagels..THEY ARE THE BEST! Happy St. Patty’s Day!
Yeah, I knew I’d be in the minority on that one. But yay for bagels! 😀
Such a fun survey! Of course, because food is one of my favorite subjects/passions/obsessions ( 😛 ), and because I am kind of a weird almost-blog-stalker person, I answered all of them, except I wrote down my favorites as the answers. ;P
Pancakes, waffles, or French toast: Well, I’d take French Toast casserole (my aunt makes an awesome one), but pancakes with fixings wins. Pancakes are about the fixings, right? right? 🙂
Pie, brownies, or cake: I only like pie if it’s not fruit…but brownies are WAY better…I mean, it’s chocolate. Need I say more? 😛
Crinkle-cut, steak, or curly fries: Will I be thrown out of I say I don’t like fries? Arby’s seasoned curly fries are okay, and In-and-Out’s fries are pretty good…for fries. But I’d rather have my carbs some other way.
Pizza, pizza rolls, or bagel bites: Pizza, every time. I a.d.o.r.e. pizza, though I’m super picky about it. I’m like, don’t mess with my pizza, lol! 😛
Sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, or peanut butter cookies: Can I combine the chocolate chip and the peanut butter? Otherwise, I tend to be picky about the way my cookies taste, but I’d probably go for the chocolate chip.
Bacon, sausage, or ham: Bacon. Hands down. Though some dishes would not be the same without ham.
Onion rings, potato skins, or mozzarella sticks: Ooh, really hard. Definitely NOT the potato skins; I don’t like potatoes much and have never been a fan. Don’t make me choose between the other two…maybe mozzarella sticks??
Crab, lobster, or shrimp: Again, hard, because I rarely have any of them and I love them all. But maybe crab?
Mini burger sliders, ribs, or hot wings: I’ve never had any, but I’d be most likely to try the mini burgers.
Quesadillas, burritos, or tacos: I think I’d say quesadillas…childhood favorite and lots of memories. Plus, cheeeeeese! But tacos + fixings? Also pretty awesome.
Bread rolls, cornbread, or buttermilk biscuits: Not sure what the bread rolls would be like, but I’m not a fan of either of the others, so that would most likely be my favorite. Breads are one of my favorite carbs, but usually the more artisanal, gourmet types…does that make me a food snob? 😛
Beef, pork, or chicken: Chicken. I used to think I loved pretty much any meat, but recently I’ve realized chicken is not only my go-to, but my hands-down favorite. I still like beef and pork, but I’m a lot more picky about how it’s made.
Energy drink, tea, or coffee: Coffee…I love the taste in mochas and in just about any dessert, but it doesn’t love me very much, making me light-headed or sometimes giving me a mild headache right after drinking coffee/mochas.
M&Ms, Skittles, or Reese’s Pieces: None. I know Reese’s are supposed to be chocolate/peanut butter (a favorite flavor combo of mine, as I’m sure you’ve noticed!), and M&M’s are chocolate, but they just taste too sweet/not like the real-deal to me. Although Trader Joe’s makes a pretty amazing pb cup. 😉 Skittles don’t even make the chart.
English muffins, bagels, or croissants: Bagels, easy. English muffins are okay. The rest of my family loves croissants, and I used to, but now they just taste too greasy and chemically to me.
Lasagna, spaghetti with meatballs, or mac & cheese: None? Maybe the right kind of lasagna or mac and cheese…man, answering this survey, I really feel like a food snob…
Ice cream, milkshakes, or frozen yogurt: Oh. Man. We hit the big one. ALL OF THEM!!! I want them all. I don’t think I could live without a single one (though I shouldn’t say that, because last time I said that, I developed an intolerance to that food 😛 ). But my forever love ever since I had my first bite is froyo. I still <3 the other two, especially ice cream, but I like just about every single froyo I try. But frozen desserts…definitely one of my weaknesses!
I felt a little food-snobby doing this, too! A little like… “I like that food – but only if it’s made really well…”. I’m totally with you on the frozen desserts and being picky about the way my meat is cooked. And a bunch of other stuff, but especially those 🙂
Hi Ellen!
I couldn’t agree with you more on what you said about French toast and pie. I am definitely a pancake and waffle girl, and I love brownies. I like the corner ones best, so I bake them in a muffin tin because then everyone is a “corner”!
You have a lovely blog and this was such a fun post to read. I think I will have to steal it too!
I love the idea of baking brownies in a muffin tin! You get the crispy edges and the gooey center all in one – the best of both worlds.
Thanks so much! I’d love to read all your answers 🙂
