Happy Friday! How was your week? Considering I finished finals and came home, it’s safe to say mine was pretty great. 😉 Yesterday during the day, I went grocery shopping, walked my dog, and did very little else. In the evening, I ate Chipotle (❤️) and watched Christmas movies and decorated our Christmas tree with my parents.
For the last two years, we’ve put the tree up and never put ornaments on it. It always seemed like it would take too much time and just wasn’t worth it. Okay, so we were lazy. It’s fine. This year, I was determined that we would do it. And we did!
We’ve accumulated a lot of ornaments over the years, and this year my dad convinced my mom to only put up ornaments we actually like and (potentially) get rid of the ones we don’t really love. So this week’s “favorites” are going to be some of my favorite ornaments. Let’s get to it!
- Old handmade ones
This is a lie. I think these are useless. Sure, I made them when I was five or younger, but they really aren’t anything special. My mom was saddened that my dad and I voted to leave these off the tree. So… the real “favorite” here is that I think we’re finally getting rid of my old foam and fabric ornaments.
- Barbie ornaments
I was obsessed with Barbies when I was younger. I had a ridiculous amount of Barbie-related merchandise. This includes at least five Christmas ornaments. I used to (discreetly) hang out around the Christmas tree and make up stories about the ornaments and play with them. I still think they’re pretty ornaments, but I don’t awkwardly play with them anymore.
- Diet Coke ornament
Tea may have recently taken up residence in my life, but there’s still nothing like Diet Coke for me. It’s only fitting that the cute, sparkly ornament has a spot on the Christmas tree.
- UChicago ornament
This is brand new! But UChicago is a pretty big part of my life and I’m proud of it. It’s school and it’s home away from home. I love it. The end.
- Headless ballerina ornament
This is my favorite ornament for no deep, meaningful reason. Sure, I did ballet for a short time when I was little, and I think the ornament is a pretty one, but it doesn’t hold huge significance for me. I actually like this ornament because it’s headless. This is not as twisted as it sounds. I think one year we opened up our ornament boxes and this one was just… headless. She used to be intact and one day, she wasn’t. A normal person probably would have thrown the ornament away. My dad, however, decided to try to hang the body separately from the head. It worked, we left it, and it’s been our strange tradition ever since.
So, yay! Our Christmas tree is up and decorated and I’m feeling the holiday spirit. Life is good. And that’s all for me this week. Have a wonderful weekend!
Do you decorate a Christmas tree? If so, do you have a favorite ornament?
Any big plans this weekend?

My favorite ornament are the Mickey and Minnie caroler ornaments that I put up each year. When I was little, I would play with them for an hour or so before putting them on the tree. I loved to play with dolls (Barbies were great) so these seasonal toys were something to look forward to 🙂 Your diet coke ornament is so funny!! We all have something random we love.

Haha I’m glad someone else played with their ornaments as a kid!
I love these posts! I love looking at people’s trees when I’m at their house and inspecting all the ornaments. Now that we have our own, my favorite is probably the ornament of my son’s foot when he was 2 months old, but when I was a kid my favorite was a glass Little Mermaid ball ornament
I do that, too. You can see a lot of people’s memories via their Christmas trees – so crazy. The ornament of your son’s footprint sounds adorable!
Your tree is so pretty! I LOVE looking through all the boxes of ornaments and finding some of the weirdest thing! Hand made are always the best! My favorite though is my baby “sweet moments” (or whatever their called) big fancy ball ornament. I always make my mom put it up since I’m so scared I’ll drop it!
Mom’s are pretty great for the little things we just can’t bring ourselves to do 🙂
I’ve never seen a headless ballerina ornament! I love that you decorated this year. Enjoy your tree!
Haha she might be one of a kind 😉 Thanks so much, Heather!
All of my ornaments on the tree are handmade, and I love it. Our Christmas tree, to some, may look like a hot mess, but it’s my favorite tradition. We take a good two hours sorting through all of the ornaments, laughing at the horrible artwork. It’s so much fun!
That sounds like a lovely tradition! I’m sure there are a lot of memories on that tree!
OH my goodness the headless ballerina is so great! LOL, I love unique Christmas ornaments.
She is probably one of a kind 😀
LOL at the headless ballerina! I love that something strange like that can become a fun family tradition to bring back out every year.
My favorite Christmas ornaments are big, silver or red glass balls. I think they look so pretty and classy on the tree! (I helped convince my family to toss the pre-k ornaments last year, too, haha!)
I love those ornaments, too. I love the idea of a tree decorated with ornaments that hold some sort of memory, but I kind of prefer the look of more composed trees.
