Hello hello hello! Happy Friday! I had every intention of checking in yesterday, but Wednesday was consumed with unpacking, organizing, and planning for the next week and yesterday flew by as well. Anyway, I’m all moved in now and have a few spare minutes, so I thought we could end this crazy week on a good note and look back at some of our favorite things that made it so lovely. Sound good? Yay! I’ll go first.
- Kilwin’s Fudgie Brownie and New Orleans Pecan Praline ice creams
Can I go a week without ice cream as a favorite? Okay, so I did last week. It’s still a rare occurrence. 😉
Tuesday night, after a dinner made of delicious hotel appetizers, my mom and I walked across the street for (what else?) ice cream. I knew I wanted something chocolatey, so the Fudgie Brownie was perfect, but I couldn’t just have one flavor! 😉 I have a total weakness for a good pecan ice cream, so I went for the New Orleans Pecan Praline, and it was buttery, with crunchy sugared pecans. It was more ice cream than a reasonable person needs, but I never claimed to be reasonable about my ice cream.
- My room/apartment!
Guys, it’s so big! That’s our room and the kitchen, obviously. The pictures of the common area and bathroom aren’t super exciting, but they exist! I don’t really even have words. I just love it.
- My slightly cheesy decorations
Last year, I really didn’t put much effort into decorating my room or making it homey. This year, I really wanted to change that and make my space a little more mine. Here’s the result:
- Brunch at Bongo Room
We had a free(ish) day yesterday, so I met some of the other O-Aides for brunch downtown. I got a big ol’ pineapple upside down pancake topped in a mound of vanilla cream and a pretty fruit plate. The pancake had some sweet crispy edges, was insanely doughy without being undercooked, and the pineapple was caramelized beautifully! And the vanilla cream tasted like the best vanilla bean ice cream ever, except it wasn’t frozen. Deeeelicious.
- Interacting with more than 5 people
All the colleges in Ohio operate on semesters, and so do a lot of others. Since UChicago is on the quarter system, most of my hometown friends have been gone for almost a month. Much as I love my family (a ton!) and the cashiers at the grocery stores, it’s been a little while since I’ve spent any significant amount of time with people my own age. It’s fun stuff.
And I’m in training for a bunch of today. I hope you (and I) have a fabulous weekend! I’ll talk to you next week!
Butter pecan ice cream: yea or nay?
What are you loving this week?

Happy Friday! Your room brings back so many memories – I always start missing school this time of the year! Enjoy it 🙂

Thank you! It’s hectic but so fun!
I think your place is quite cute. I love butter pecan ice cream, my stomach does not tolerate ice cream much these days. Just a quick tip I would not leave the food under the bed/on the floor. Not trying to be annoying, just worry about bugs. The decorations are personal so they are perfect. Have a great day

Thank you! And thanks for the tip! I’ve had it set up like this before, but I’ll be careful 🙂
Your room is so cute! And I bet having a kitchen in your apartment will be so nice for making meals or even just baking brownies for a movie night 🙂
And I think we’re ice cream soul sisters…just sayin’. I LOVE kilwin’s. My roommate last year worked there and would bring me some sometimes. Their Kilwin’s Tracks (basically moose tracks) was incredible!
The kitchen thing is pretty great. Certainly beats our dining hall food 🙂 And of course brownies are a must!
Oooh I’ll have to try that – moose tracks is awesome!
That ice cream is faceplant worthy!
Ah! I love your room/apartment! It is so big! But that’s good! The bigger the better! Haha!
It’s so roomy! I can’t get over it. My room last year was so teeny!
I love your decorations! So pretty…
I don’t remember if I’ve ever had butter pecan ice cream, but it sounds like heaven! I have a very unladylike desire to go face first into that bowl of ice cream, lol!
Thanks!
Hey, I won’t judge 😀
Honestly, I’d rather have anything chocolate…I’m not big on nuts in my ice cream. I feel like once they get super-cold, all I can taste is a dry-crumbly-crunch and none of that yummy nuttiness comes through. I’d rather have my nuts by the handful…or the spoonful. 😛
It looks like your home-away-from-home this year is pretty fabulous, and the set-up looks great! Congrats! Things I’m loving this week:
1) Discovering new music artists. Though my cousin recommended one awhile ago, I only just got around to looking up her song suggestions, and then I wonder why I didn’t look any of them up earlier.
2) Finally getting around to publishing my first post on a public blog. I’ve had this blog name reserved for a while, but never felt like I had the time to devote to another blog. Well, I’m giving it a trial run and who knows if I’ll be able to keep it up.
3) Having a kids’ fun night with my sibs. Our grandparents have been here, so we’ve mostly been spending time with them, which we enjoy, but it’s also nice to get back to our normal routine. And we made our weekly kids’ night that we usually have while our parents have a Date Night extra-special by watching a movie. 😉
4) Goat’s milk anything. I’m allergic to dairy, and I had wondered if this also applied to goat’s milk products. I did a bit of experimenting with goat cheese, but I wasn’t sure if I was reacting to it. I finally decided to try milk and yogurt, both of which I loved, and so far, I’ve experienced no ill effects. *fingers crossed*
5) Making tentative plans to visit my beyond-amazing cousins. I love all my family, but these people are among the ones I currently am missing the most. Of course, I also haven’t yet met their 4-month-old, so that may be influencing me somewhat. But only a very little. 😉 ‘Cause they’re just awesome.
Hope your first weekend at school is a good one! Here’s to a great upcoming year! <3
I’ve been so busy that I haven’t really had time to sit down and enjoy nuts/nut butters (all the on-the-go eating!). I can’t wait to just chill with a spoon and some peanut butter. Is that weird??
Thank you!
1.) I love that! We’ve been listening to a lot of music this past week and it’s always fun to hear new stuff.
2.) Ahhh finally. I’ll have to check that out! Like I said, crazy-busy ’round here, but I’ll go take a look 🙂
3.) That sounds so fun!
4.) I’ve only ever had goat cheese, and I don’t hate it 🙂 I’ll keep an eye out to try something else.
5.) Awww that’ll be awesome!
Hope you had a great weekend, Hannah!
Oh man, University dorms!! I spent my entire 4 years at UBC in them and was pretty happy in them. The decorations are the best and are what make the rooms more unique!
I really like our dorms! I could see staying them for a while.
