TGIF, am I right? To put it mildly, this has been kind of a long week. Or, more accurately, a long day and a half. But I like to end the week on a good note, as you know, so that’s what we’re gonna do. Let’s look back at some of our favorite things from the week.
My tribe
Mini life update coming at ya.
Like I said yesterday, I had an MRI on my hip on Wednesday. I got the results yesterday: a stress fracture of my pubic bone. (Um, awkward place much?) The recovery time is somewhere in the ballpark of two or three months, which means no running, biking, elliptical-ing, or intense walking for at least one of those months.
As an EDS patient, my primary concern with that is that I can barely sit still for two hours without needing to move, and I work out in the mornings to relieve enough pain to get through the day. My doc was not particularly understanding, so after a lot of tears, I started looking for someone who would be.
A baseball coach, a former college athletic trainer, and Susie to the rescue. All three have ideas for how I can keep moving and also heal. Also, I have Emily to commiserate with about being injured, my family members’ and friends’ endless hugs and support, and hopefully some really good doctors in Chicago to help me out. I love humans sometimes. So, while I’m still annoyed and sad and will probably tell you all my feelings in a different post, I have some hope. I’ll get better, I’ll run Disney, and I’ll hopefully keep running for a long time after that. And I’m lucky to have the best support system ever. The end.
My grandma & grandpa
{They drove down to come to my senior academic awards. Do you know how boring those were?}
I got to have lunch with my grandma on Wednesday before my MRI since she was in town visiting friends and it was fun to hang out and chat with her without the usual hustle and bustle of family gatherings. And both my grandma and grandpa are coming down to spend the afternoon with us tomorrow as our last little get-together before I go back to Chicago.
I spent a lot of summer weeks at their house growing up, doing everything from making piñatas with my former-Spanish-teacher grandma to fishing with my grandpa to seeing shows and going out to dinner. It’s their house we wake up in on Christmas morning, and they host the vast majority of our family gatherings. They send me “just-thinking-of-you” cards and care packages when I’m at college, and they support me endlessly and always show interest in my life. I love them bunches and I’m so lucky to have great relationships with them.
A moist heating pad
My PT started using a moist heating pad on me before I stretch my hips to loosen them up, saying that it works better than dry heat. So, I got one and I love it. Depending where my tightest muscles are at any given time, I’ll put it under my calves, drape it across my quads, wrap it around my hip, or just sit on it. It loosens things up quite a bit and makes stretching and foam rolling afterward feel easier.
The Federalist Radio Hour
This is one of my favorite podcasts. It’s a daily show, but I mostly listen a few times a week. There’s a lot of very-engaging, very-intelligent discussion about both politics and pop culture. And Ben Domenech (the main host) is equal parts funny and smart and addresses the audience as “boys and girls” in a way that is miraculously neither annoying nor condescending. That’s impressive. He seems like a cool guy.
OSU football
It’s almost fall and it is college football season. My grandparents are coming to watch the Ohio State game with us on Saturday. I love love love college football.
My tribe, @OhioStateFB, and @FDRLST - the big & small things @EllenSlater is loving this week. #bgbcommunity Share on XYour turn:
Have you ever made a piñata? Gone fishing?
Are you a football fan?
What are you loving this week?

I haven’t officially commented in a while, but I want you to know that your blog is one of my favorite things. And I especially love this one because all the things you listed are my favorites, too. Well, I’ve never used a moist heating pad, but if it makes you feel better, then it’s one of my favorites. My other favorite is a four-day weekend and getting to spend the day with you. I love you.

Aww. Thanks, Daddy ? I’m so lucky to have you. Thanks for a lovely weekend – and a lovely summer!
I love our tribe! We are pretty lucky to be surrounded by awesome people that support us and lift us up when needed.
(And I love your grandparents and college football season, too!)
We’re the luckiest people ever. Even if we’re a little bit broken sometimes.
We will get you put back together, my dear. And until then, get your college football on!
I’ve said it many times, but THANK YOU. You have no idea how much better I felt after talking to you last week.
Grandparents are the absolute best! <3
I love football – especially college football! It was one of the deciding factors when I was trying to figure out where I wanted to go!
Hahaha I wish I’d taken it into account a little more when I was deciding. I actually thought I’d just rather enjoy it from afar, but I miss it when I’m at school now!
Ugh bad doctors/doctors who don’t sympathize are the wooorst. My best friend is a pediatric nurse and she always tells me the craziest stories about doctors who are terrible with patients, which I will never understand – shouldn’t you love people/have a ton of empathy if you’re a doctor? I’m glad you have other people in your life to balance it out!!
have a great and restful weekend, Ellen!
YES you should be so much more sympathetic than that as a doc. Thanks so much, Morgan ❤️
You are blessed with such an awesome tribe. 🙂 And a supportive mom and dad are amazing blessings; I hope that your body heals quickly and that you continue to get good rest. 🙂
Thanks so very much, Emily! I feel so lucky, even with an injury 😉
Glad to see all the tribe and family love!
I LOVED fishing! I would always go with my dad and bother…the best!
I’m pretty “eh” about football. It’s off and on 😛
Ahhh I love fishing! I wish I did it more often these days. It’s weirdly relaxing. 😛
ummmm… OUCH?!?! No wonder your hip has been giving you so much trouble! At least you know what it is now!
I’m not a football fan – but then again I’m not a fan of any kind of sport, haha!
Definitely glad for the information 🙂 Now it’s just a relax + recover game. 😛
Sending lots of love to one of the sweetest granddaughters ever. You notice that I did not want to offend a couple other little gals. I so love your kind comments about your grandparents. You were, and still are, so easy to spend time with and to love.
We are hoping for some good news as you deal with your current physical concern.
Love ya!
Thanks so much, Grandma. It was great to see you last weekend! Love you bunches ❤️
Ouch! I’m glad that you found out what is going on with your hip though so that you can be on the mend now. 🙂 I’m not a huge football fan, but football very much reminds me of fall. My dad always used to turn on the afternoon games after raking leaves in our yard, and when I was younger I’d sit beside him and watch even though I didn’t understand the game. 😛
Aww that’s a sweet memory, football lover or not 🙂
Ah I’m so sorry to hear about your frustrating appointment and about how the doctor wasn’t more understanding. That can be so frustrating! Glad you have a strong support system to lean on when you need it 🙂 Sending healing thoughts your way!
Thanks for the love, Liv 🙂
YES for a support system. You’ve got one near and far <3
Also, I'm a HUGE football fan (mainly pro, but I love sports in general). It's one of my favorite parts of fall haha…minus the sweet potatoes and cinnamon galore.
Thanks so much, Emily! You’re awesome. ?
Yay for some sports love! Fall is my fave for that reason, too. And the food. Duh. Always the food. 😉
