Hey there! Happy Friday! Since Tuesday at 10 am (that’s when my math final ended), this week has been very generally relaxing. I’ve packed a lot, eaten a lot of delicious things, watched a lot of Netflix, and said a lot of “see you later”s. It’s been really nice, and I’m glad I get to finish out the year on kind of a laid-back note. Let’s look at some of the little lovely things from the week, shall we?
- Colored shorts
They’re so summery and fun! Also, sorry for the somewhat icky mirror pictures. Anyway, the bright colors make me happy and they make a nice change from denim.
- Sandwiches
No pictures because, frankly, sub shops don’t always make super pretty sandwiches. However, I really enjoy the smushed, messy, completely un-fancy sandwiches that Potbelly and Subway make. I’ve had two in the past week, and they’ve pretty much hit the spot.
- Super-nice staff
The staff members who work the front desk and clean our dorms are so nice – as long as you’re nice to them. I always try to say hi and ask how they’re doing when I pass by, and they reciprocate and take interest in my life. Obviously, I have plenty of student-friends that live around me, but it’s nice to be surrounded by a few extra friendly faces and interacting with the staff makes me smile.
- Anticipation of summer
Can that be a favorite? I say yes. I’ve started to put together a summer bucket list (I’ll share soon!) and I’m insanely excited to see friends, take pictures, cook, bake, read, study, write, and work. Among other things. Really excited.
- Ice cream
I saw this on Instagram from Monica, and I absolutely relate. I don’t know what was the best, but I’ve recently enjoyed Kilwin’s butter pecan and cookies and cream, Ben & Jerry’s chocolate fudge brownie, and a mint chocolate chip milkshake with Oreos. I can’t get enough ice cream. It’s the best.
What’s your favorite summer style?
Do you have a favorite sandwich?
What are some things you’re loving this week?

Favorite summer style is the kimono jacket, as you saw in my latest blog post ;). And seriously, even if it wasn’t warm, I think I would find many excuses to eat ice-cream, its just one of those ‘perfect for any occasion’ foods!

Oh, I eat ice cream allllll year, too. It’s my favorite <3
Ice cream for the win!! Although, sometimes I prefer it in winter because there is 0 chance of it melting 🙂
And that (plus deliciousness) is why ice cream is an all-season food 😉
I’m all about the sandwiches lately too! Carbs are all that i have been craving! My favorite would have to be anything with lots of veggies, oh and mustard! I don`t think I have a preferred style for summer other than less is more haha.
I’m always up for some carbs! The crunch and fresh flavor veggies add to a sandwich is great, and I seriously love mustard. And I can’t bear to be too hot, so I totally understand the less is more approach 🙂 Have a great weekend, Alexa!
I think one of my favorite sandwiches is grilled cheese. Sometimes I change it up by adding guac or ham, which is also really good. I love pretty much any sandwich, though!
Things I’m loving:
1. “Tryin'” by Matthew West
I love all of his latest cd, but especially this song. It really speaks to me and my struggle with body image/feeling beautiful the way I am. “…I don’t wanna fit in, So much for measuring up, Truth is sinking in, Who I am is good enough; No more tryin’, No more tryin’, Tryin’ to be, Anybody other than me, ‘Cause I’m no copy, I’m no replay, I’m one of a kind, And starting now I’m done tryin’…” (Plus the music fits it perfectly, and just makes me happy!)
2. Simple relationships. This is hard to explain, but in a world where things get so complicated, I really appreciate business/co-worker type relationships, where (for me at least) things are simpler. I guess I like feeling like I’m not in a competition like I do so many times in personal relationships. I also feel like people value me more when I’m doing something, and not being “just” a friend. Sad and pathetic, but that’s kind of where my life is right now.
3. Running into old friends at the perfect time. I guess it was a couple weeks ago, and I was feeling down, and was convinced I was never going to have a social life again, when we bumped into old friends at Costco! Not just any friends, either. They were friends that I know like and value me, and who seemed genuinely glad to see us. It couldn’t have been better timing, and it was one of those things where there were so many weird “coincidences” that day, I know it wasn’t any kind of coincidence.
4. Getting letters. I only have one pen pal (thank goodness, I’d never be able to keep up otherwise!), but getting her letters is absolutely one of the best things that can happen to me! I always look forward to it, and I know I will feel so much better for reading it.
5. Razors. Sorry if this is TMI, but after a friend of mine told me a razor horror story, I’ve been sooo afraid of razors, and have always used an electric shaver. Well, my sister and mom love razors, and when my shaver started to quit, I finally decided to give it a try, and I’m IN LOVE. And kicking myself that I didn’t do it earlier! It’s so much easier, and I have pretty much the best shave cream ever. (I guess I can’t really say that, since I’ve only tried the one, but it is pretty awesome! 😀 ) I love how my legs feel and I find myself rubbing them throughout the day because they are so soft!
Hope you have fun this summer, and I can’t wait to hear about your plans/adventures! Have a lovely weekend!
1.) That song is pretty 🙂
2.) I understand where you’re coming from. It’s super nice to know exactly what a relationship is and not have it have a bunch of little nuances and power struggles, real or imagined.
3.) I can’t wait to start running into old friends back home!
4.) I love getting letters. I’m really bad at replying, though. I share a pen pal journal with three other girls and it’s reeeeally embarrassing how long I’ve had it now. I need to write in it and send it back as soon as I get home!!
5.) Razor-shaved legs. Best feeling.
Thanks, Abbie! Have a great weekend 🙂
Great post! There is nothing better than an avocado lobster grilled cheese sandwich in the the summer heat!
Ohhh my. That sounds divine. I love lobster!
I love no cook summer meals, like sandwiches, salads, and frozen fruit!! Have a great weekend!
Those are some of my favorite foods! I’ve been snacking on frozen bananas and raspberries like crazy 🙂
I eat ice cream allll year round. No shame here! Those shorts are so colorful and pretty! Where did you get them?
Same with ice cream – it’s my favorite dessert… and easily one of my favorite foods 😀 And I got the shorts from American Eagle! I think these are the coral ones: http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?productId=3332_4068_660&catId=cat3270002 and the teal ones are similar but from last year.
Oh my, I laughed so hard at the ice cream meme…so like me too!
I love, love, love sandwiches and I really want to try Potbelly!! I’m trying to convince someone in my family to go with me. 🙂 Also, I’ve kind of been craving sandwiches even more recently, so your mention just made me want it more. Must fix this. 😉 Favorite sandwich is too hard!!! I usually put a million things on my sandwiches and pile it high. Currently, I’m loving one I make with lunchmeat, sautéed mushrooms, sprouts, guac and cashew cream. I love it, but really have a weakness for almost any sandwich.
I love summer clothes, because I am really sensitive to lots of layers of clothes, even though in winter, I get so cold, I need lots of layers. So I am loving the short skirts, flip-flops and t-shirts!
My favorites this week…
1) Shower jams. I love listening to music, and especially in the shower. I can really get into it though, which means a lot of times, because of how early I usually want to take a shower, I don’t listen to music. But over the last few weeks, there’s been a few times I’ve felt that it’s late enough that I can turn it up and belt it out. 🙂
2) Froyo…I know, this is really *always* a favorite. But this week, especially so, because my sibs and I went out for a spur-of-the-moment post-lunch treat yesterday, and our favorite froyo shop *just so happened* to have all my favorite flavors in stock!!! I was so jazzed!! Plus, I felt good about myself, because for once I didn’t rush through it, worried about how fast it was melting, and bonus, managed to have enough self-control not to make myself sick over it. 😉 I took my time and enjoyed every bite…it was the best EVER, and eating it with some of my favorite people made it even better!
3) Blogging every day. I challenged myself for the month of June to write one post for my private family blog every day, and so far, I’ve really been enjoying it. I don’t necessarily write a lot; in fact, my goal was short, but daily. I’m really enjoying just popping in every day with a “how my day was/random thoughts” post.
4) My new “Live Forever” album by Matthew West. I love it and actually I think I may listen to almost every song every day. I almost put his song, “Tryin'” as my favorite, but then I just had to do the whole album. 😉
5) Eating meals outside. It’s been so yummy sunny warm that we can now take our meals outside if we want to. And most of the time, my siblings and I want to. 🙂 We are just drinking up this sun… This last week, hardly a day has gone by when we didn’t eat at least one meal outside, and some days, all three!!
Congratulations on finishing out your freshman year!! It’s been a lot of fun to follow along with you, and I look forward to hearing about any summer doings you’re willing to share. Have a lovely break full of fun, sun, laughter, family, friends and relaxation!! <3
I’ve never had cashew cream, but you sound like a sandwich master, so I’ll take your word for it! Your sandwiches sound like my kind of thing – I love putting a lot of stuff on ’em.
I need a lot of layer, usually, too. The only downside to summer for me is getting blasted with air conditioning when I’m not wearing the appropriate clothes. I bring jackets with me everywhere juuuust in case.
1.) I love shower music, too. When I’m home, I listen (and terribly sing along) to everything from country to pop to old rock to show tunes and Disney music in the shower. Not so much at school, for probably obvious reasons 😉
2.) Froyo is yummy. Toppings are my favorites. And I really like enjoying froyo and ice cream slowly, whether they get a little melty or not! Soooo good.
3.) I’m going to start blogging more (and hopefully with a little more variety than just life posts), and I’m really excited to start.
4.) I just listened to “Tryin'”! I do love new music <3
5.) I like meals outside when there aren't tooooo many bugs around. I'm not a fan of bugs.
Thanks so much, Hannah! I'm so glad I started this and "met" you! I'll definitely be sharing some summer stuff and probably "introducing" some family and friends a little more, as I get more confident in the whole blogging thing 🙂
I love your colored shorts! I’ve really been loving shorter, loose skirts this summer (SO comfy!) and long, breezy Palazzo pants (probably because they’re also so comfy! and perfect for those awkward summer occasions when it’s hot but you can’t wear shorts)
Thanks! I’d love to find some Palazzo pants – they seem perfect for nicer occasions and also for situations involving lots of A/C. 🙂 And I’m all for cute skirts!
Favorite summer style is 100% summer dresses. It gives me an excuse to be comfy but still cute. 🙂 PS: Do you have an email? I’d love to chat with you about something important girly. <3
I love dresses, but I always neglect to wear them. No idea why. Maybe I’ll try to change that this summer! Feel free to email me at myuncommoneveryday@gmail.com any time!
First of all, you are stunning! You pull of them shorts like nobody’s business.
Fav summer outfit: I am dying to try the romper. But until then, I am loving racerback tanks.
Fav sandwich: oh man, so many! 🙂 Pork and tomato cucumber with mayo. Sounds odd but it is the jam to my toast … to completely ruin that analogy but oh well 😉
And can I just say, I love that you blog about balance so well? So many blogs I read are completely one way or the other. It is incredibly refreshing to read about someone who enjoys ice cream but also gets up and runs in the morning, who sings the praises of sour candies but also promotes discipline. I LOVE it. Love it. And (last thing, I promise 😉 ) thank you so much for your sweet comment on my 13 Things post. I really appreciate your encouragement and your reaching out! It meant a ton Ellen!
Thanks so much <3 You're so sweet.
Ahh I kind of want to try a romper, too, but I'm not sure I'll pull it off so I haven't bought one.
That actually sounds pretty good. I'm not huuuge on mayo, but I do think it can add something to a sandwich.
THANK YOU. You have no idea how much that made my day. And of course! I loved your post - it showed such wisdom and good sense. Have a fabulous day! I hope your finals went well!
