It’s been a long time since I did a day in the life post, but I’d like to get back in the habit of it. I’m a nosy person, so I always enjoy seeing what others are up to, and I also like being able to look back at what past-me was doing. I think I’ll do a few throughout the quarter, hopefully showcasing different days of the week, since that’s where a lot of the variation comes in.
Let’s start with yesterday! I spend a pretty big portion of my Mondays in class or discussion, but my evenings are a little freer than on other nights.
5:41 am – Wake up and toss on workout clothes and a sweatshirt.
5:50 am – Walk around the living room of the apartment, stretch, and jog in place to alleviate some morning stiffness.
6:00 am – Brush my teeth and pull my hair back into a ponytail.
6:08 am – Eat a perfectly ripe banana while pouring myself a bowl of cereal, grab a container of Greek yogurt, and fill my water bottle.
6:11 am – Sit down to eat and read blogs for a little bit.
6:17 am – Get a text from my mom.
My heart melts a little. I love my puppy.
6:32 am – Get a text from Erin, who I was going to meet in three minutes to go to a kickboxing class. She’s not feeling well and isn’t going to go. This makes me debate whether or not I’m going to go.
6:37 am – I decide to go anyway. Kickboxing involves a lot more coordination than I actually have, but I still really enjoy the class.
7:00 am – Kickboxing!
8:20 am – I get back to the dorm a totally sweaty mess, grab some clothes and my shower stuff, and head straight for a nice shower. I have a hard time convincing myself to get out and face the day. But I manage.
8:43 am – Chat with my friend, Celia, about her upcoming interviews. She dismisses one company because they sometimes put new hires in their Cleveland office, and proceeds to bash Ohio. It’s okay; she really likes big cities and we’ve been over this before. I try not to take offense 😉
8:45 am – Do my hair and makeup and try to convince myself to get dressed. Apparently, I’m having a hard time getting motivated this morning.
9:15 am – Finally get dressed so I can eat a snack before class. Scroll through social media for longer than I mean to. Oops.
9:34 am – Eat Greek yogurt and take a dose of Airborne. I will not get sick. Read blogs for a while longer.
10:14 am – Leave for Self, Culture, and Society.
10:30 am – Class starts. We talk about Marx, as we will for much of the quarter. More specifically, we discuss the power of advertising and the concept of society as something we both influence and are influenced by. It’s weird for a discussion-based class here to only be 50 minutes, but this one is, so while we’re done by 11:20, it doesn’t feel like we’re actually done. There’s a lot to discuss.
11:30 am – Spanish class starts. We’re (re)learning the subjunctive tense. Most of us have prior exposure to Spanish, so it’s not uncommon for this class to feel like review. It’s not all that challenging, but it has increased my confidence in the language. A little.
12:35 pm – Get back to the apartment to make lunch.
12:47 pm – Sauté sliced sausage and cook shaved Brussels sprouts and sliced bell peppers in the leftover fat. It’s pretty similar to last night’s dinner, but I need to use up the rest of my sausages, it’s easy, and it’s delicious.
1:05 pm – Finish part one of lunch and pour a bowl of cereal for part two because I ❤️ carbs. And then I add a handful of salted almonds and a piece of dark chocolate because they’re tasty. I respond to emails until I need to leave for discussion.
1:40 pm – Leave for Intro to International Relations discussion. Call my mom to chat about her day on the way there.
1:59 pm – IR discussion starts. We talk about some key terms and the causes and resolutions of the world wars.
2:50 pm – Walk to the economics building. I have econ discussion there at 4:00. I find a table to sit at so I can start my planner for the week and do a little IR reading to try to make the little gap a productive one.
4:00 pm – Econ discussion starts. We turn in our problem sets from last week and talk about taxation and its impact on firms and supply.
5:00 pm – I start walking back to my dorm. Around 5:11, my dad texts me and says he’s on his way home from work if I want to chat. I call to hear about his day and tell him about mine.
5:32 pm – Set out salmon to start thawing a little for dinner. Eat a bag of Sour Cream & Onion Baked Lay’s that was up for grabs in our dorm lounge. Also eat an English muffin and a couple Special Dark Reese’s. Probably should have just made an early dinner, but snacks felt easier. Work on this post.
6:45 pm – Run water over salmon and start prepping dinner while I chat with one of my roommates about her super-busy week.
6:51 pm – Make dinner. Eat at 7:00. So ugly but so good. I sautéed salmon in a bit of olive oil before adding a glaze of maple syrup, balsamic vinegar, and brown mustard. I used the same sauce for a pile of sautéed cauliflower. It was a very brown meal, but it was awesome.
7:10 pm – Take out trash and wash my dinner dishes. Work on this post.
7:25 pm – Head downstairs to the lounge to write out some Spanish vocab. End up doing that, watching Canada’s election results, and chatting with friends who are playing cards while scrolling through Facebook.
8:35 pm – Come back upstairs. Talk to my roommate about Model UN while pulling together an evening snack.
8:53 pm – Sit down to eat said snack. Forget to take a picture. Oops. It was Greek yogurt, a handful of raspberries, a big Honeycrisp apple, and Justin’s chocolate hazelnut butter.
Nutella does nothing for me, but that stuff is incredible.
9:27 pm – Clean up my snack dishes. Eat a pumpkin spice English muffin and some chocolate. Read blogs. Relax.
9:50 pm – Get ready for bed.
10:06 pm – Bedtime. Good night. 🙂
How was your Monday?
Do you like day-in-the-life posts? What kinds of posts would you like to see? Recipes? Advice? Serious stuff? I’d love your input!

I love Day in the LIfe posts! And Pippa is ADORABLE!

Thanks, Emily! I kinda like her 😉
Loving day in the life posts! I’ve never done one but I’m going to add it to my list of possible posts. Thanks!
Thanks for reading! 🙂
Hi ellen! So glad I stumbled upon your blog today! I love day in the life posts. My days certainly looked a bit different in college – I generally snoozed away and rarely got in an AM workout.
Glad you stopped by!! If you come back (please do 🙂 ), you’ll learn that I’m not super capable of sleeping in. I try to make the most of it, though it is kind of annoying sometimes!
I really enjoy seeing your day in the life posts. As a college student, It’s really interesting seeing other how students plan their days. Also, I’m a nostalgic senior so I really enjoy that you talk about your classes and dorm life lol .
Thanks, Jess! I love hearing about what older students are up to. That seems so far away, though I know it’ll feel like it all flew by in hindsight!
You brush your teeth before you eat breakfast!? :O
Haha yeah… I dunno, my mouth feels icky when I wake up 😛
You have a busy day! I’m taking 6 classes, but they’re spaced out so I never have more than 2 a day. I’d love to try kickboxing, but I’m with you on the coordination thing haha. I have yet to try the Justin’s Hazelnut butter. I’m not a nutella fan, I think it’s too sweet!
Ahh. See, on the quarter system we only take a maximum of four classes that usually meet 2-3 times a week. It just so happens that I have a separate “discussion” section for two of my classes that makes my Monday packed with all four subjects. Most days are a little less structured.
And I don’t like Nutella because it’s so sweet, but Justin’s tastes nutty and salty and chocolatey – much more balanced!
Your lunch and dinner both sound scrumptious! Yummy! I had a pretty awesome Monday hanging out with my aunt…how is it that when you’re hanging out with some of your favorite peeps, the most mundane tasks seem to fly by and not really be that big a deal?? ?
I’m sorry, this is probably so not helpful, but I like all your posts. A mix of serious, fun, a peek into your life and what you’re doing/eating. ? Whatever you feel like…
Glad you had a fun day with your aunt! And thanks for the feedback!! 🙂
Love day in the life posts! (not that I am nosy or anything.. 😉 ) Discussion based classes sound interesting- we never did anything like that- are there a lot of people in them or fewer than in your other types of class? xx
Lol we’re all a little nosy 😉
So, my Self, Culture, and Society class is technically a “discussion-based” class because it’s small and the teacher rarely lectures. I mean, he gives us a lot of insight into difficult texts, but he mainly asks questions and facilitates and engages in student discussion about the reading. We discuss in there to understand what’s happening in what we’re reading before we write about it for midterms and finals.
My econ and IR discussions are a little different. I go to each of those classes twice a week and the professor gives lectures to a large room. Then, on a separate day, we break out into much smaller groups with a teaching assistant, who highlights the key points of the lectures and class readings or teaches additional material to help the professor out.
Sorry for the long-ish explanation, but I hope that helps!! 🙂
No worries- its interesting to hear about different teaching styles. I like the sound of the student discussion on the reading in your Self, Culture and Society class as invariable, everyone always has a slightly different interpretation of things and its great to hear different points of view 🙂 x
I love day in the life posts! Your day sounds pretty similar to mine. Busy college life! Also, the satisfaction of a perfectly ripe banana… unlike anything else. So good. Sausage is one of my favorite foods, so I am alllllll about that salad you made for yourself!
I’m definitely coming around to sausage – I used to hate it, but now I actually seek it out. So funny how our tastes change!
I realize the dad demographic is a bit limited, but I love day in the life posts because it gives me real insight into what your days are like. I also like it when you have the occasion to write something serious. And your regular fun posts are great, too. But maybe I’m a little biased. Whatever you’re in the mood for. Keep ’em coming!
Love you ?
I love day in the life posts! They’re so much fun (and I love sneaking a peek at other people’s daily lives.) I share the Justin’s hazelnut butter love too….mmmmmm!
Thanks, Flora! 🙂
How long does it take to write “day in the life” posts? And how is your mom’s daughter preparing and eating Brussel sprouts?
I made a crock pot vegetable-beef soup. Huge. Am sharing a bit with a couple older men I visit as part of church visitation team. They love me. Also baked an apple cake. Took that to cards tonight at the club house. We have lots of goodies–a good reason to go.
I was unable to leave reply about weekend. It was super. Got to see “Bridge of Spies”. With Tom Hanks it has to be good. It was. Dinner at Mitchell Steak House. Delicious and we even had steak and wine leftover for Sunday’s dinner. Bucks win topped off my birthday.
Thanks for sweet card.
Not terribly long, as long as I do a good job of keeping track of my day! I love Brussels sprouts. I differ from my parents on those and sweet potatoes 🙂
That sounds yummy! And your weekend reply was successful, but I’m glad to read about it again 🙂
I love day-in-the-life posts! It’s so interesting to see how other people spend the hours of their day, and especially other college students. I agree 100% about Nutella- way too sweet. Your 86% midnight dark chocolate looks incredible!
And I like your daily life type posts!
That’s probably my favorite chocolate! So good!
Love posts like these! You manage to fit so much into your day! I am thinking of doing a post like this soon!

Thanks! I’d love to see yours!
This reminds me a lot of my freshman/sophomore days. The days were so jam packed of classes! I love that talked with both your parents- I’m close with mine also.
Totally agree with you one nutella vs justin’s!
My days are definitely full! And, yes, I feel sooo lucky to have a good relationship with my parents. Glad you can say the same 🙂
