Happy Friday! So, I’ve decided to number these “day-in-the-life” posts because I like writing them, but titling my average days… They aren’t exciting enough for that. I’ve already covered what my Tuesdays look like (rather crazy, in case you haven’t seen those), but this particular Thursday was actually pretty busy, too. So, here it is.
5:43 am
I wake up naturally. This week, I’ve been up before 6:00 a little more often than I’d like, but I’ve been trying to make the best of it. By 6:01 I’ve left my dorm and started a slow jog to the athletic center.
6:07 am
Arrive at the gym and work out for a little bit. Thankful I dragged myself out of bed. Otherwise, I’d have just stayed and worried about my calc midterm in a few hours.
6:46 am
Start my walk back to the dorm. I see pretty views, and remember why I love mornings.
6:50 am
I walk past the building where I’ll be taking my calc midterm in less than four hours. I kind of wish that building wasn’t there. Not because I’m a melodramatic or anything. Nope.
6:58 am
I get back to the dorm and head to get a shower. There’s a spider in the shower and I contemplate just using a different one. Using the bigger shower wins and, sorry, I kill the spider. Time of death: 7:04 am.
7:08 am
Shower, wish I never had to leave the warmth.
7:32 am
Do my hair and makeup alongside my roommate in our room.
8:07 am
Head to breakfast and listen to the end of a conversation between housemates, who are headed to class, about the difference between being ripped and swole. Laugh. Just laugh.

8:17 am
Go back up to my room to get my stuff. Round out breakfast with some cereal and a couple of protein bars.
8:39 am
Leave for class, knowing full well I’ll be early. I like being early.
8:40 am
Run into classmate heading for breakfast. He admonishes me for being so early. But I like being early.
8:48 am
Arrive at my philosophy class. Talk to the other early people about calc and poetry.
9:02 am
Class starts. Today, we talk a lot about The Republic and what the point of power is/why people want it.
10:20 am
Class ends. Almost time for a calc midterm. Walk to the building I mentioned earlier with a classmate, who wishes me luck. Yeah, I’ll need that.

10:32 am
Midterm starts.
11:35 am
Midterm ends. I don’t know how it went. Better than I thought, but not great. Oh, well. It happens. I head back to the dorm before lunch with a kid in my calc class and we talk about how it went. He feels the same way I do.
11:46 am
I’m back at the dorm, and I text my parents and a couple friends for a little bit. I also try to prepare for my adviser meeting in a couple hours, though I have no idea what to do. Basically, I scroll through the course catalog and hope my adviser has all the answers to pretty much everything I should do for the next four years.
12:44 pm
I go down to get lunch and talk to some housemates about calc and midterms and what we do in our adviser meetings. No one seems all that clear on that one.
1:11 pm
Go back to my room and text a friend from home and eat an Oreo before I go to my adviser meeting at 1:44.
1:51 pm
Take this picture of such a freaking pretty day.
Then talk to a housemate I run into about an issue she’s having with a paper. Then commiserate with a calc classmate over the midterm.
2:03 pm
Have my adviser meeting. It only lasts till 2:32, but she’s so helpful and patient and nice. We talked about a bunch of possible courses I can take over the next couple quarters. I leave feeling better.
2:43 pm
I get back to the dorm and eat a snack before finishing up my econ homework due tomorrow. Around 3:20 I outline my philosophy paper due Monday. I plan to go to my TA’s office hours to talk about my paper and bounce some ideas off him tomorrow morning. That helped a lot last time.
3:45 pm
Leave to go to the library and go over my econ homework with some friends from class. We meet up at 4:02, check our work, and are done by 4:53.
5:03 pm
I get back to the dorm, then go eat a quick early dinner (and a Pumpkin Spice English muffin) before my econ TA session at 6:00. We have 50 minutes set aside for the session, but it ends early. Around 6:42 I head to meet some housemates for intramural bowling.
7:01 pm
I learn that I’m just as awful at bowling as I thought, but we start keeping score and wait for the house we’re playing against to arrive. They don’t show up. We win by default and get a couple free hours of bowling. Sweet.
8:15 pm
We’ve bowled a couple games already and three of us decide to walk back to the dorms. It’s a gorgeous night and we get to talking. It’s the perfect night to just sit outside and talk, so we grab a bench at 8:22 and sit there for about a half an hour. It’s lovely.
8:42 pm
My dad sends me a text meant for my mom about how cold the house is. I decide to give him a quick call just to check in.
9:30 pm
I sit down with a snack and finish up this post.
{Honeycrisp apple, Chobani, chocolate graham crackers, Justin’s honey peanut butter, and an Oreo}
I love substantial nighttime snacks. Lovelovelove.
10:29 pm
Eat another Oreo. Why not.
10:40 pm
Crash in bed. Long, good day. And hey, it’s practically the weekend!
Do you like bowling?
What are you looking forward to this weekend?
Fred Slater says
This is probably my favorite post yet. Very funny! Getting awoke is a new one for me, but I’m still waiting to learn the difference between that and ripped. Please share. Bowling can be fun. I think it mostly depends on the people you’re bowling with.
EllenSlater says
Thanks, Daddy. Luckily, I was bowling with some fun people.
Also, I’m not sure what the consensus on “swole” vs. “ripped”. I think “swole” refers to any and all bulking up, and “ripped” just refers to adding muscle mass. Who knows. Oh, well.
Fred Slater says
As you gathered, “awoke” is what my phone turns “swole” into. I assume swole is more about bigger and ripped is more about definition.
Love your nighttime snack, BTW! I don’t think I would enjoy bowling, though I’ve never been. I’m looking forward to celebrating my birthday this weekend!! Pizza…froyo…life doesn’t get much better than that, IMO! 🙂
Nighttime snacks are the best 🙂 Bowling… if you think about it too hard, it’s pretty unappealing. Very germy. But fun sometimes, nonetheless.
Yay! Happy birthday! Pizza + froyo sounds awesome! Enjoy!!
Love how exact your times are 🙂 what is a TA? And my take is that your advisor works like a guidance cousellor?
A TA is a teaching assistant. They’re either graduate students or upperclassmen who help professors with grading and such. They often hold break-out discussion/lecture sections to give bigger classes a smaller feel and help students more personally. And yeah, advisers are pretty similar to high school guidance counselors, I’d say.
